Fancy enjoying culture, nature and tasty stops along the way whilst you walk? Discover Frederiksoord and Wilhelminaoord with ‘Happen en Stappen in de Kolonie’.

You’ll walk through the distinctive landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the way, you’ll pass numerous monuments and special spots that tell the unique story of the Colonies of Benevolence. You’ll start at the Proefkolonie museum for a hearty start, followed by two tasty stops along the way. This way, you’ll enjoy, step by step, all the beauty and delicious treats that Frederiksoord and Wilhelminaoord have to offer.

Fancy finding out more? Combine your walk with a visit to a museum, a fun activity or dinner at a local restaurant. Or stay the night and take the time to explore the Colonies of Benevolence further.

• Start and finish: De Proefkolonie museum, Majoor van Swietenlaan 1A, Frederiksoord
• Please report to the museum reception desk
• Here you’ll find the route, a map, vouchers for the stops along the way and further information
• Start between 12.00 and 13.30
• Days: Friday – Saturday – Sunday
• Excluding: Christmas holidays – 19 December to 3 January 2027
• Distance: 11 km (shorter routes are possible)
• Booking in advance is handy, but not essential

EXTRA TIPS for a full day out!

• Visit the De Proefkolonie museum beforehand (admission not included)
• If you have a Museum Card or a Vriendenloterij VIP pass, you’ll enjoy free entry
• Along the way, you’ll pass De Tramloods, the Koloniehuisje and the Kolonieschooltje. You can pop in for a look around on presentation of your museum ticket
• At ‘Ons Dorphuis’, you can see the outdoor exhibition ‘The Story of Wilhelminaoord’
• The heritage restoration project DE PROEF. is also well worth a look
