Right next to the Dieverbrug lock you will find the Dieversluis visitors' centre. Here you can hear and read information about the Drentsche Hoofdvaart, water management in Drenthe and the beautiful surroundings in Dieversluis with a nice audiovisual presentation. Fun for young and old alike (open from 1 May to 1 October)

Southern Drenthe was largely covered with peat. In the early 17th century, a group of investors had a canal built from Meppel to drain the peat (dried peat). At the site of the peat extraction, a new town, Hoogeveen, arose and gave its name to the canal, the Hoogeveense Vaart.
