Maurits Fondse Trio... plays Billy Joel

In 2024, Billy Joel turned 75. This was celebrated with a number of special concerts by Maurits Fondse. He pays tribute to the ever-popular American pianist and songwriter. In 2026, too, we will be celebrating his life and his music. The audience will be taken on a journey through his life story, and the songs will come to life in a special way within this context.

Maurits Fondse sings of the turbulent life of pianist and singer Billy Joel. Drawing on his famous songs (and lesser-known gems), Fondse tells the life story of the street urchin, born in The Bronx, who grew up on Long Island (‘Downeaster Alexa’), and who had a huge love-hate relationship with the music industry (‘The Entertainer’). Fondse also highlights Joel’s distinctive, almost philosophical lyrics (‘Summer Highland Falls’), his love for New York (‘Say Goodbye to Hollywood’ – ‘New York State of Mind’) , his performances in Russia during the Cold War (‘Leningrad’), his fatherhood (‘Lullabye, Goodnight my Angel’) and, of course, his relationships with the many women in his life (‘She’s Always a Woman’). With 160 million records sold and 33 Top 40 hits, Billy Joel is one of the world’s most successful artists of all time.
