The simple schoolmaster's house in Boschoord belonged to the former Reich School III located across the road. From the establishment of the Colonies of Weldadigheid in 1818 until his death in 1844, master Jan Hessels van Wolda was responsible for education in both the Free Agricultural Colonies; Frederiksoord, Wilheminaoord, Willemsoord and Wortel (Belgium) and the Dwangkoloniën; Veenhuizen, Ommerschans and Merksplas (Belgium).
Johannes van den Bosch introduced compulsory education for the children of settlers. This was exceptional because the general compulsory education law in the Netherlands was not introduced until 1901.
