Parking
Trailer parking is available at Dagcamping Noordelijke Veldhuizen off Bosweg 27b, Hoogersmilde.
Signposting
The riding and driving route is signposted with orange square signs with a white print of a hoof and wheel.
Please note: the maps give only an indication of the route. Due to wet paths, fallen trees or other unforeseen circumstances, the route in the field may deviate or be temporarily modified. Therefore, always follow the on-site signposting.

- On the border of southwest Drenthe and southeast Friesland, lies a special area. The Drents-Friese Wold National Park is among the most beautiful and important nature reserves in Europe, making it a Natura 2000 area. The National Park consists of 6000 hectares of forest, heathland, shifting sands and stream valley grasslands. The dunes of the Aekingerzand are characteristic, the splash lake 'Canadameer' a lovely place to visit with your horse.
- For horse riders and drivers, the Drents-Friese Wold National Park offers four day routes, each with its own colour pictogram sign. The day routes take about 2 hours and start at 4 different locations. There are also black bridle/men paths. These are connecting paths to shorten or connect a route.
- Routes from Diever, Appelscha, Zorgvlied and Hoogersmilde pass through the Drents-Friese Wold, while the Desperadoroute is a day route towards Vledder. It is marked in purple and a lot longer, about 27 km.
- Important information
In the National Park, various breeds of cows and sheep walk in different grazing areas. Keep driving calmly, do not draw attention, drive around them with a curve so that you keep a good distance or turn around if you do not trust it. You are a guest in their habitat. Close the gates properly after passing, this way the animals stay in the grazing areas. - If you have any comments about bridleways within the National Park, please report them to the forester(l.koel@staatsbosbeheer.nl) telephone number office Hoogersmilde 0592-459431. She will then pay attention to this as soon as possible, and take action where necessary.
- Golden rules for a pleasant stay in the National Park for all:
- Riding outside bridleways and routes is not allowed. Cycling and footpaths are quickly destroyed by hooves. If you have to cross cycle paths and footpaths, please do so at walking pace to minimise damage.
- Don't let your horse eat from bushes or trees.
- Pass other recreationists at walking pace, this prevents annoyance and dust clouds
- Don't take your horse into a fens for drinking. Rare plants along the banks are very vulnerable. Hoofs can also damage the soil, which can cause a fens to leak.
- A dedicated splash pond is located north of Lake Canada on the Appelscha-Wateren road. Easily accessible from trailer park the Halve Maantje.
- Due to fire hazard, we kindly ask you not to smoke in the national park.
- Preferably take your rest breaks at dedicated horse rest areas. Horses often attract flies. If you use the regular picnic areas, it is not so pleasant for the other guests.
